Musang King Durian Season Guide

The durian (/ˈdjʊəriən/)[2] is the edible fruit of several tree species belonging to the genus Durio zibethinus. It has formidable look and overpowering odour but taste exquisite like no other.

Durians are available anywhere in the world. Different nutrients and minerals provide by the soil makes them special by tasting different from each other. There are more than 100 species of durian in Malaysia, they were discovered to suit everyone’s taste. The Musang King is a common durian found only in the Pahang state during the southwest monsoon season, which is June to September. The flesh of the durian is thick and creamy with a hint of bitterness. It is best eaten raw, or added in desserts such as sticky rice or cendol. Musang King’s flesh can be used as fillings for all kinds of pastry, traditional cake (kuih-muih) or cake. During durian season, it’s easy to get durian pizza, ice-cream and pie. Although it seems weird to cook durian as a meal, but our ancestors have proved us wrong, they discovered dishes such as chicken durian curry and tempoyak durian in Malaysia.

1. Location

Definitely Raub, Pahang. It is where 75% of the Musang King is planted in whole Pahang.

2. Season

During June to September, the southwest monsoon season, when it's rainy season.

3. Freshness

- Check the stem and husk, dried stem or husks means it has leave its tree from hours to days.
- Check for animal eaten holes or insect infected hole, they might be rotten.
- Smell it! If u smell a watery or sour smell, it is probably from weeks ago.

4. Ripeness

Hold the durian firmly, shake and listen. If the durian seed is loosen from the shell it is ripe.
- If it is ripe, you will hear a knocking sound
- If it’s overripe, you will hear a faintly knocking sound since the flesh is sticky. Smell it, the smell is extra strong.

5. Method

Cut the stem from the fruit. Then turn to the back of the fruit, observe the star of the fruit. Poke the knife straight into the middle and then twist few times. After seeing an opening, pull them apart

To open the other segments, press your hands on the rind and then pull apart the husks.

6. Authenticity

Musang King Durians have distinct features and smell, that can be verify instantly.

7. Preservation

Cryogenic freezing technology is used. The whole durian fruit will be exposed to liquid nitrogen at -90°C for one hour and then stored at -18°C for two years without losing its original flavour, taste, flesh colour and texture. After defrosting for 4-5 hours, the durian will resume its unique aroma and ready to be eaten or cooked.
