Background
Johor evolved its own identity after the fall of the Melaka sultanate to the Portuguese in the 16th century. The last ruler, Sultan Mahmud, fled to Johor and turned it into a powerful trading empire. Its old capital along the protected reaches of the Johor river were moved to the Riau archipelago, and attacks. Johor not only had to but also the Acehnese in Sumatra and later the Bugis, losing Singapore to the British in 1819.
